Preventing Your Dog from Begging at the Table

Preventing Your Dog from Begging at the Table

Many dogs like to whine and grovel at your feet while the family is eating dinner, hoping to catch any errant scrap thrown their way. If you’d like to stop this undesirable behavior, try these tips from a Chico vet.

Ignore Your Dog

Ignoring your dog’s behavior is much easier said than done, but it will teach your dog that begging doesn’t get her anywhere. When she whines, simply continue with your meal and don’t look at her. Make sure everyone at your dinner table follows suit—if just one person slips her a scrap or gives her attention at all, the effect won’t work.

Put Your Dog Somewhere Else

It’s often easiest to simply put your dog somewhere else, eliminating her access to the table. In the dog crate, in another room, or tethered to a piece of furniture are good spots. Be sure to provide a few toys to keep your dog occupied until you’re done eating.

Feed Your Dog Her Own Meal

Some dog owners find success by giving the dog her own dog-food meal at the same time that the family is eating dinner. This way, your dog has something to eat and she’ll feel like she’s included in the family ritual.

Spot Training

A spot command that tells your dog to automatically go to a chair, corner, or the pet bed can be quite useful for treating this behavior. If your dog already knows a spot command, use it when she’s begging at the table. If she doesn’t, ask your veterinarian how to get started with training. The spot command can be useful in a wide variety of situations, so it’s a good thing for your dog to know!
